Daily Sun Protection That Works
Sunscreen is effective only when the product, amount, coverage and reapplication all work together. A polished morning application that misses the ears, uses too little product or is never renewed outdoors cannot provide the protection printed on the label.

Darker skin has natural melanin, but melanin does not replace daily sun protection.
Protection is relevant to every skin tone
Sun exposure affects more than sunburn
Ultraviolet radiation contributes to skin cancer and premature skin ageing. For darker skin tones, sunlight and visible light can also worsen uneven pigmentation, melasma and post-acne marks.
Daily protection therefore has two roles: reducing cumulative skin damage and helping prevent existing areas of excess pigment from becoming darker.
Understand the exposure
Three types of light matter in a complete routine
Longer-wave ultraviolet radiation
Reaches deeper into the skin and contributes to premature ageing and cumulative damage.
Shorter-wave ultraviolet radiation
Strongly associated with sunburn and also contributes to skin cancer risk.
Visible light
Can worsen dark spots and melasma, especially in medium-to-deep skin tones.
“Broad spectrum” tells you the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB. A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides adds protection against visible light.

The five details that make a sunscreen practical
A beautiful package does not tell you whether the product suits your routine. These five label details are more useful.
SPF 30 or higher is the recommended minimum for routine protection.
Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.
Water resistant should state either 40 or 80 minutes—not “waterproof”.
Tinted with iron oxides is especially useful when dark marks or melasma are concerns.
Non-comedogenic may be preferable when the face is oily or acne-prone.
The amount changes the result
Most under-application happens before the person leaves home
Apply before going outdoors so the product can form an even protective film.
Most adults need about this amount to cover all exposed body skin.
A practical minimum for the face and exposed facial areas according to dermatology guidance.
Reapply while outdoors, and sooner after swimming, sweating or towelling.
Complete the application
The areas most often forgotten
Sunscreen should cover every area not protected by clothing. The small missed areas are often the ones receiving repeated exposure.
Hairline and scalp
Apply sunscreen to exposed scalp or use a wide-brimmed hat when hair is thinning or parted.
Ears and temples
Cover the tops, backs and edges of the ears as well as the area beside the hairline.
Eyelid area
Use a suitable product carefully and add UV-protective sunglasses.
Neck and upper chest
Include the sides and back of the neck, not only the visible front area.
Hands and feet
Reapply after handwashing and cover the tops of the feet when wearing open shoes.
Lips
Use a lip balm offering SPF 30 or higher and renew it during the day.
A working day of protection
Build reapplication around what the day actually contains
Morning application
Apply an even layer after moisturiser and before makeup, allowing enough time before outdoor exposure.
Commute and errands
Add shade, a hat and sunglasses instead of relying on sunscreen as the only protective measure.
Check the surface
Consider whether wiping, sweat, heat or hand contact has disturbed the protective layer.
Outdoor reapplication
Renew sunscreen when continuing outdoors, rather than stretching one morning application through the whole day.
Late-day exposure
Continue protection during the afternoon commute, sport, school collection or outdoor work.
Reapply according to the day
The clock is only one trigger
Every two hours is the standard outdoor guide, but the protective film can be disturbed earlier. Water-resistance does not mean permanent protection.
Follow the product’s 40- or 80-minute water-resistance label.
Renew once the skin is dry enough for an even application.
Friction can physically remove sunscreen from the skin.
Reapply at least every two hours even when the skin remains dry.
For darker skin and pigmentation concerns
Tint can improve both protection and wearability
Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides help protect against visible light, which can worsen dark spots and melasma. The right tint can also reduce the grey or white cast that makes some sunscreens difficult to wear consistently on deeper skin tones.
Choose a format you can apply correctly
Cream, gel, stick and spray are tools—not shortcuts
Cream or lotion
Easy to see and spread evenly across the face and body. Often the simplest format for measuring a generous amount.
Gel
May feel lighter on oily skin or in humid weather, but still needs complete and even coverage.
Stick
Useful around the eyes and for portable reapplication. Several deliberate passes are needed to avoid thin coverage.
Spray
Helpful for hard-to-reach body areas, but must be applied generously and rubbed in. Avoid inhalation and open flame.
Why good products underperform
Four failures that happen after purchase
Applying too little
A thin decorative layer does not reproduce the protection used during product testing.
Using sunscreen only in strong sunshine
UV exposure also occurs on cloudy days and through ordinary outdoor routines.
Relying on makeup SPF alone
Most people do not apply enough foundation or powder to achieve the labelled protection.
Never reapplying
Sweat, water, wiping and time reduce the reliability of the original layer.
When to seek professional advice
Sun protection cannot diagnose a changing skin lesion
Arrange a skin assessment for a new or changing mole, a sore that does not heal, unusual bleeding, persistent scaling or a dark mark that looks different from the others.
Professional guidance can also help when every sunscreen causes burning, rash or eye irritation, or when melasma and pigmentation continue to worsen despite consistent protection.
